A visionary of 20th-century American design, Michael Taylor is best known for creating the laid-back, sunlit elegance of the “California Look.” This sculptural chair, designed for Baker in the 1960s, is a rare and highly collectible example from a formative period in his career. Drawing on classical Chinese design—specifically the Ming dynasty yoke-back form—Taylor stripped it down to the essentials: clean lines, natural materials, and bold silhouette. It’s a prime example of his early exploration of global influences, and one of the few furniture pieces he produced in collaboration with a major manufacturer.
