Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969) was a German-American architect and designer and one of the defining figures of 20th-century modernism. A former director of the Bauhaus and later head of architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology, his radically pared-back approach to architecture and design became synonymous with the phrase “less is more.”

Designed by Mies in 1929 for the German Pavilion at the Barcelona International Exposition, the Barcelona Collection has become one of the most recognizable icons of modernist design.

This pair, produced by Knoll in 1965, was originally purchased to furnish Stillman House I in Litchfield, Connecticut, designed by Marcel Breuer. Acquired by the Dalton-Morris family when they moved into the house that same year, the stools remained with the family after they sold Stillman I in 1985.

Featuring tufted leather upholstery over chrome-plated steel frames, the pair, with original Knoll labels intact, brings together two defining figures of 20th-century modernism: Mies van der Rohe and Breuer.
