A rare early-career graphite drawing by Todd Norsten, created in 2004 just before his inclusion in the 2006 Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Rendered on heavy deckled-edge paper and signed and dated by the artist, the work features two delicately hand-drawn envelope forms—one suspended near the top of the composition, the other anchored below. These spare, iconic images are central to Norsten’s practice, transforming everyday visual ephemera into meditations on communication, absence, and the space between what is sent and what is received.
Todd Norsten (b. 1967) is an American conceptual artist based in Minneapolis. Working across drawing, painting, and printmaking, he gathers and archives imagery from daily life—envelopes, matchbooks, speech bubbles, and fragments of text—creating works that balance clarity and ambiguity. His approach has been described as “duplicitous simplicity,” elevating the mundane through careful draftsmanship and conceptual rigor.
Norsten gained international attention following his inclusion in the 2006 Whitney Biennial. His work is held in major public collections, including the British Museum, the Walker Art Center, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the RISD Museum.
