Gerth Biese (1901–1980) was a German painter and printmaker whose work spanned painting, drawing, and printmaking. Born in Karlsruhe, Biese studied art in Stuttgart and Karlsruhe and later settled in Tübingen, where he served as director of the University of Tübingen’s Drawing Institute.
Evening, signed and dated 1964, is one of Biese’s woodcuts from this period. An impression of the work is held in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. Biese’s work is also represented in the collection of the National Gallery of Art.
