A Southern California native, Donald Florence creates paintings that explore the quiet tension between presence and absence. Encouraged by his father, a draftsman, Florence earned a scholarship to CalArts, where winning a prize judged by Walt Disney helped launch his career.
Before returning to his own art, Florence spent more than four decades as a creative director in the worlds of fashion and beauty, working with brands like Barneys, Bloomingdale’s, and Revlon. In 2004, he began painting again, first focusing on small still lifes and portraits, then moving into more atmospheric subjects.
Now based in Connecticut, Florence paints daily, driven by a lifelong love of color, structure, and storytelling.
